Selected comments on XVII by outsiders: "Troop 17 was a troop I had in camp when I was a Commissioner at Sakima back in 1980. They were quite a troop to be remembered. Considering it has been 26 years and I still remember their Troop #, I guess that says a lot. They were an amazing well-organized troop to the point that many on our staff felt they were militaristic, but to me I only saw a well-oiled troop with a high success rate, excited kids and many Eagles to boast about." "...that wild bunch down at troop Seventeen!" -- a prominent long-time council scouter |

What Troop Seventeen meant for me! (unsolicited comments) "The army was a breeze for me because of my Troop 17 experiences" -- Jack Taylor, Eagle Scout "If this troop can save just one kid, then we've done our job... and we've saved a lot more than one!" -- Dave Barnes, ASM "Troop Seventeen was the first time in my life that I got to do something without adult supervision." -- Lincoln Mayer "I credit the Bakers with most of the total direction my life (as a Forest Ranger) has taken for the last 50 some odd years." -- Andy Lindquist, Eagle Scout "I had a LOT of fun in that troop." -- Dr. Mark Aylward "What I learned in Troop Seventeen saved my life in Viet Nam." -- Denny Swaine, ASM "When I retired from the Navy after 31 years I was responsible for 18,000 people, every one in the Pacific Submarine Force, and I took care of them. The same way we would take care of a member of our troop. Being a member of that great organization (Troop 17) taught me a lot." --Jim Kikis "I certainly enjoyed twirling that flag" -- Billy Webber, ASPL, Eagle Scout |

"...The entire troop was dispersed by 1500 with the main body on bikes... All in all it was a good Camporee... "We were the only troop in pup tents, the only troop in full uniform, the only troop that could drill, and the only troop with all patrols receiving excellent ratings. Troop XVII made a very good showing for itself, and was recognized by all the camp officials as such..." Richard G. Barnes, S.P.L. May 18, 1947 |
